Question:
Is the Camelot Close Contact saddle good or is it cheap and bad quality?
Mystery :)

I was looking into buying a saddle and I found a Camelot close contact saddle on Dover saddlery. It got a 5 star review and it is $319.00. I have a small budget. I have been riding for 6 years and so I jump and I ride every week. I do not own my own horse. I ride a pony and the Camelot review said it fit a variety of horses. Of course I'm going to talk to my trainer about it and see if it is good but I still want to know ahead of time if the saddle is fairly nice... I'm not looking for a really really nice saddle. If you could tell me if the Camelot is somewhat nice and a good buy and comfortable and anything else that might be helpful like if you liked it and why or if you don't like it and why that would be great. Thnx!

Yea, its a good saddle and a good price. You don't need to buy something very nice at first (ie. pessoa etc..) lol

And i highly disagree with the first guy that answered. You need to be comfortable too. If you're uncomfortable, you wont ride as well as you could. But you do need to make sure it fits you horse properly.

Personally, I've heard terrible things about Camelot. But that is just my experience. A little pricier, but definitely lasting and quality is a Circuit Saddle by Dover, although their cheapest saddle brand new is $800. I have heard only wonderful things, and they have great versatility as well as keeping you in the right position (for the right price ;)). They are made in the same factory as Pessoa, so the two saddles relate in suppleness as well. You could possibly find a used Circuit (try eBay), but seem to be difficult to find as they are becoming very popular. A used Stübben would also be a good pick. Since you said just schooling, a WinTec would be a wise choice as well. Steer clear of their Close Contact model, I had to get rid of mine as it threw my legs so far forward it would slam into the horses shoulders. Their All-Purpose are quite decent though :) You could find a new or used one in great quality for probably around the same price (or less) as the Camelot. Good luck on your hunt!

you dont buy a saddle to suit you.You buy a saddle to fit the horse and as you say you dont own a horse you should not buy a saddle for someone elses horse. There is no gaurantee you will always ride this horse that you use. What if it is unjured or ill etc you will be riding another horse.with a saddle it depends whether you need a narrow medium or wide fitting and every horse is different. Also it deoends on what size you need I.E 16,17.18inch etc, there is a lot to consider about buying a saddle it should last you for years if looked after. You should not consider buying a saddle for someone elses horse, its a different matter if you are a professional.

It's good to see you again here, Peanut. Please don't let Lord Donald get to you. He's one of our favorite trolls these days, along with his buddy Albert Kahol the Ahol. They're usually mildly amusing, and occasionally side-splittingly funny. I like the look of the saddle, but I'm with the other answerer who said she prefers to buy used. If I only have a few hundred to spend, I'd rather get better quality with a few scratches and bumps, than new that is lower quality. I also like the Wintec dressage saddles I've seen that are made with the synthetic suede. The smooth 'pleather' is just icky. I preferred my old Wintec with nylon fabric covering to the newer plasticky fake leathers. It was an honest, inexpensive, comfortable, durable, easy-care saddle that wasn't trying to be something it wasn't. I don't know what they have in a close-contact saddle these days. Good luck finding the right balance between quality and price, in a saddle that fits you and horse and your riding style.
